Planning of the Wedding Cake

You should start your research on wedding cakes at least five to six months ahead of your planned wedding date if you are looking for a stunning one. If your choice is a simple wedding cake, you can begin your search three to four month ahead of time.

Finding the Wedding Cake Baker

Recommendations for a good baker can come from friends, consultants for the wedding, caterers, reception coordinators, bridal fairs, or bridal magazines. Assess the baker’s work portfolio so you can see pictures of the wedding cakes they’ve created. A lot of bakeries have opportunities for you to come in and have a flavor tasting of a variety of wedding cakes they make, so take advantage of this. When you’re ready to order your wedding cake, make sure you cover the specifics such as size, tiers, flavors, fillings, colors, decorations, presentation, delivery, date, time, and location.

The baker will need to know:

  • The number of guests attending wedding
  • What season your wedding will be held or room temperature of reception hall
  • The overall reception room size
  • The final desired wedding cake decorations
  • The address of where the reception site is for the wedding cake to be delivered, along with clear directions and any specific instructions for baker regarding delivery
  • Any other dessert the might be served at the reception
  • The room decor, decorations, and colors
  • Kitchen location in regards to the refrigeration
  • The names of the reception site coordinator, florist, and caterer

Wedding cakes can have a wide cost price range, starting at around $200 and going up to $1,000 plus. Many of the dazzling wedding cakes that you see in national magazines can be upward of $1,200.

Wedding cakes are also priced per serving, with the range being from $2.00 per serving on up to $20.00 per serving.
